Description
Alhambra vase, in the shape of an amphora, decorated with lustre, blue and brown paintings, presenting a fight between a Muslim warrior and a Christian mounted knights, with scrollwork and blossoming flowers around. On the opposite side there is an epigraphic band running across the vessel, written in blue in Kufic style, a large palmette on top, a “Solomon’s seal” below, with scrolls and flowers around. Andalusia, Granada, 15th century. X Comparative material: There is a similar Alhambra vase in the Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg, dated to the early 14th century, cf. Amsterdam, Heavenly Art/Earthly Beauty, Amsterdam, 1999, cat.no.150, p.191. Geza Fehervari - (GD.008)
