One of a magnificent pair, this fierce leonine
head was perhaps originally attached to a
wooden chest or sarcophagus. The box has
vanished with the ages, but the lions continue to
take their guard duties seriously, with glaring
eyes, furrowed brows and bared teeth. Time has
in no way diminished their standing as kings
among lesser beasts. We are still in awe of their
rich, classical beauty.
