Athena was a favorite subject for
artists in the Renaissance and
Neoclassical eras. In this work, the
goddess Athena, embodied in bronze, is
armed with helmet, shield, and spear,
revealing her classic beauty. In
particular, her posture, mid-spear-
throw, and emphasis of this action
through the articulation of her wind-
swept clothing are reminiscent
(representative) of the style of
Walter Schulze-Thewis, a 19th-century
German sculptor who the piece is
attributed to.
