Many vessels found today from the ancient world
were important ceremonial pieces, often
containing offerings. This vessel is one such
piece and is created in a reptilian form that was
particularly common at the time. The figure
stands erect on two feet, yet a third support is
added for further stability. Within these legs are
small balls allowing the vessel to create a sound
when moved. The small hands clasp onto the
chest, while wing-like additions appear from just
behind the arms. The head is especially beautiful,
with the decoration done in appliqué. Direct
attention is placed on the nose, where the
nostrils, scales and the teeth are clearly
displayed. At the top of the head, the perforated
neck of the vessel appears and ends with a flared
lip. As a whole, the piece is an excellent example
of the style and dedication found in the ancient
works of art in Costa Rica.
