The image of this pregnant woman is a
particularly powerful one as it`s impact crosses
both historical and cultural boundaries. The
sculpture is the embodiment of the theme of
fertility, and especially when displayed through
images of motherhood, is fundamental to many
African works of art.
This piece contains much movement and
emotion, the resting position looks natural, as
does the way she is tilting her head. The
modelling of the figure combines realism and
abstraction, decoration is applied and incised in
the form of jewellery and serpents. The overall
result is not only decorative but highly emotive.
