Description |
After centuries of contact, the art of the Guro
closely relates to that of their neighbors, the
Baule. Guro art is distinguished, however, by an
emphasis on flowing lines and graceful contours.
This exquisite mask was originally worn in a
dance ceremony. The finely shaped head,
crowned with curved horns, most likely
represents a protective nature spirit or a fertility
god. The mask's aura of magic is undeniable. It
seems to link us with human society at some
primeval level, with the timeless mysteries of the
world.
