This cameo is set in an 18 karat gold ring.

Four horse chariots (quadriga) were a dramatic part of the ancient Olympic games. In a race over 40 teams might take part in this dangerous sport, and consequently offered great prestige to the owner of the team. This fine cameo, with its graphic depiction of horses, is similar to types found on Syracusan coins. The tyrants of Syracuse (Sicily) entered magnificent teams in the Olympics, using the event as a means to further their fame. A victory would more than offset the high expense required for the maintenance of often more than one quadriga and experienced charioteers. The engraver of this cameo has shown the horses in the act of racing, recalling the elegance and power of the magnificent animal.
