Expertly carved from a single piece of volcanic
rock with only the use of stone and wood tools
plus abrasives, this striking kneeling figure is a
brilliant example of the Pre-Columbian
sculptural skills of the ancient artisans from the
Atlantic Watershed Zone of Costa Rica. Seated
on his haunches, the stone figure rests his left
hand on an upraised knee, while the other hand
securely grasps a ceremonial cup positioned on
the figure's right leg. With a facial expression
befitting his ritual role, this ancient figure
remains forever poised in a position of homage
and respect. As we experience his commanding
presence we too become respectful, treasuring
this timeless work of Costa Rican sculptural art.
