In the art of the stirrup vessels, Moche potters
captured scenes of daily life, including the most
intimate. There is much disputed about what
these erotic vessels signify. Some believe them
to be reflections of religious rituals, others see
them as celebrations of life's sensual pleasures,
still others as icons of fertility. Even in the
modern age, they startle us with their direct
approach to sex, their unblushing depiction of
human relations. Certainly they remind us that
the fundametals of human existence change little
with time.
