This Ancient Roman silver coin has been set in a
modern 18 karat gold pin.
Born of an illustrious family with royal
connections, Annia Galeria Faustina Senior was
the daughter of M. Annius Verus and Rupilia
Faustina, aunt of Emperor Marcus Aurelius. She
married Antoninus Pius before he became
Emperor and bore him two sons and two
daughters, one of whom, the younger Faustina
became the wife of Marcus. After Antoninus'
accession Faustina Senior became Augusta and
helped her husband in a reign that is considered
to be a golden age. She was deified on her death
in 140 A.D. On this fine coin she is facing right,
wearing her hair in a tight bun, the fashion of
the time, and appears as a woman of great
dignity and honor.
