Description

The works are from the western Arnhem land region. The figures are Mimi spirits who live in caves because they are so thin that the wind could break them. They are mischievous but not malicious. When Aboriginal people first came to northern Australia, the Mimi taught them how to hunt and cook. They did the first rock paintings and taught Aboriginal people how to paint. The X-ray style pictures of a fish and a kangaroo are typical of those found in in the western Arnhem land region. It is thought that the tradition commenced around 2000BC and still continues.
