More than just the image of a Moche aristocrat,
this vessel offers a glimpse into the soul of a
vanished culture. Vases such as this reflect the
attitudes, the attributes, and the beliefs of the
proud people who inhabited Ancient Peru.
Echoing the features of warriors, nobles, priests
and kings, these portrait vessels are a powerful
record of their time. The large earrings and facial
markings of this individual tell us of his high
rank; he is most likely one of the priest kings
who governed Moche life. In his proud, serene,
haughty face, we see a man used to the
privileges of power.
