Description
In “Grounded”, Paul Botello depicts the fall of humankind. Here we see effigies of Adam and Eve hanging with nooses around their necks from the tree of forbidden fruit. Symbolically, the consumption of the knowledge bearing fruit caused the "death" of human's life in paradise. Botello translates this into the literal representation of the dead bodies of the biblical couple. In the foreground we are confronted with the results of our expulsion from the garden. Shameful of his nudity, the male figure hides behind the stone sculpture. Enticed by his sinful desires however, he fondles the female statue. Likewise, in the right foreground a woman seductively wraps her arms and legs around a male/tree figure. Here we realize that the tree of knowledge is actually an embodiment of the reclined male's phallus. Botello is therefore illustrating the inherent connection of lust, on of human's greatest vices, with the original sin. - (PB.0002)
