Description
This ewer has a globular body, a shallow foot-rim, a tall neck and a tall lobbed handle connecting the faceted neck to the body. The figure of a harpy dominates the decoration of the body. The harpy features in many contexts and traditions as a creature with magical powers and other worldly associations. This mythical creature usually features in Islamic art as a decorative device with generally positive connotations as do other mythical beasts such as griffins and sphinxes. - (GD.035R)
