The turbulent history of the early church, with all
its complexity and confusion, seems to vanish
when we see the beauty of this cross. It reflects
what is most profound and elemental in the
faith, namely the simple expression of belief in
the resurrected Christ as symbolized by the
cross. There are no arguments of doctrine or
dogma, no controversies or quarrels; simply
pious devotion from the heart and soul. This
cross would have been mounted on a staff and
carried in processions, particularly on the major
holidays and feast days. The lovely patina gives it
a venerable quality, while the concentric circles
add a mystical aspect, as if twirling into infinity.
An object such as this cross represents the most
attractive aspects of Christianity-- unadorned
beauty, purity and virtue.
