Description |
Of unusual and appealing shape, this vessel is
composed of flowing curves and complex
incising on the surface. The disc-shaped upper
section, like a lid, is in perfect alignment with the
lower portion of the body. This effect is created
by the curving of the central area, which has
three bands of fine incising at the top. It is
possible, therefore, to carry the vessel with one
hand in the body’s middle. The neck is ridged at
the base and curved at the center before
reaching the opening. A beautiful red coloration
adds warmth and richness to this vessel, which
was perhaps made as a burial offering for a
nobleman or high priest. Though little is known
about the people of ancient Djenne, their skills in
terracotta are abundantly evident.
