Description |
This genuine antique Classical Revival carnelian
intaglio has been mounted in a modern 18 karat
gold ring.
Of the many Greek personifications Nike is one
deity who wears wings, often holds a palm
branch and carries a shield. The sensuous young
woman on this intaglio appears to have wings,
she is bare-breasted and holds a large branch in
her right band. A shield floats in mid-air at
upper right with the legend VIC PAR shown in
reverse. Though the woman’s body faces
frontally, her head is turned to the right, and her
left foot 1s lifted as if she is walking. A small
palm tree is at the lower right with a thick
serpentine trunk somewhat resembling a
caduceus, also a symbol of Nike. The engraver of
this lovely intaglio may have been inspired by
ancient Roman coins, where Nike is often used as
a symbol of victory.
