The nearly naked man is depicted with his left leg raised and bent at the knee to suggest he is walking. He carries a thrysus over his right shoulder. This is a long staff wreathed in ivy and crowned with a pinecone or cones used a symbol of the wine god Dionysus and the satyrs. He also wears a petasos or traveler's hat similar to the one worn by the god Mercury.
