This genuine antique Classical Revival carnelian
intaglio has been mounted in a modern 18 karat
gold ring.
The nearly naked man is depicted with his left
leg raised and bent at the knee to suggest he is
walking. He carries a thrysus over his right
shoulder. This is a long staff wreathed in ivy and
crowned with a pinecone or cones used a symbol
of the wine god Dionysus and the satyrs. He also
wears a petasos or traveler's hat similar to the
one worn by the god Mercury. Very fine veils like
gossamer flutter about him as he moves
confidently against the brilliant amber
background of the carnelian.
