Description

This standing warrior holds a trophy head in his right hand and a stone celt in his raised left hand. His stance is solid; the pectoral muscles are clearly demarcated along with an inverted Y- shape to indicate the rib cage. He wears a thick belt carved with diagonal lines and a triangle in the center; duplicating ones made of cloth and fiber. The crown of his head is grooved to suggest either hair or a type of cap. Eyes like large coffee beans stare boldly at us, accentuated by the broad nose and slightly open mouth. Trophy heads were taken from war captives, used in ritual sacrifice as essential to fertility of the soil. This statue commemorated the completion of sacrifice and the end of the cycle. - (PF.4233)
